The Mitsubishi Eclipse of the forth generation is produced since 2006. It is available as a hatchback or convertible.

This front-wheel-drive sports car comes with a choice of two engines. The 2.4-liter model with an automatic gearbox is a bit short of overtaking power, while the V6 has enough low-down pull to brake the front tires loose even with traction control on. Unfortunately the V6 model doesn't quite have the athletic demeanor of the Nissan 350Z's V6. The 2.4-liter model is available with 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic gearboxes, while the 3.8-liter GT model comes with a 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic gearboxes.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse uses the same platform Mitsubishi Galant is based on. Even though it is a front-wheel drive car with a weight distribution far from being perfect, it is ready to run on twisty roads. Furthermore it absolutely shines on slalom, where it outruns the 350Z, Ford Mustang and Mazda RX-8. Only minimal body roll is present. It also rides more comfortable than some of these mentioned cars. Unfortunately brakes could be stronger, there is no stability control. Some annoying torque-steer is present and steering could be more responsive.

Exhaust of the Mitsubishi Eclipse emits a mean sound when pushed hard, but relatively quiet when cruising. Some road noise is present.

The new Eclipse seems to be a sound bet, as it is inexpensive sports car that offers better value for money than many rivals. It's competitors such as Acura RSX or Ford Mustang keep their value better, but it still has a good warranty coverage.

Some of the interior materials are of suspicious quality, however everything is well put together. Most of the controls are well-placed, clear and intuitive to use. There are plenty of storage spaces around the driver, but the rear passengers haven't got any oddment space.

Faux Recaro seats are standard on both trims. They provide superb comfort and support. Visibility is one of the major faults of the new Eclipse, as the huge C-pillars are the main obstacle to rear visibility.

Slightly longer wheelbase of the new Mitsubishi Eclipse and widened track opened a couple of extra inches for the interior space. You can tell the difference in increased shoulder room comparing with the previous model. The rear seats are cramped, but still useable. In general the new Eclipse has more than twice cargo capacity of a Nissan 350Z.

Even the base model of the Mitsubishi Eclipse comes with front and side airbags as standard, as well as the anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse comes with air conditioning, cruise control and electric windows and mirrors as standard. Climate control is available as optional on the GT trim only. Leather seats, 18" alloys and electric driver's seat adjustments are only available on the GT trim. Sunroof is optional on all models.

Production of the Mitsubishi Eclipse still continues.

Advantages: The new Mitsubishi Eclipse has distinctive looks and modern interior. It is affordable to buy and reasonably practical.

Disadvantages: Not as hard-core or as fast as some rivals. Rear accommodation is cramped, while some interior materials feel cheap.

Verdict: A huge improvement over it's predecessor.

Also consider: Acura RSX, Scion tC.
