The Mazda MX-5 roadster
of the third generation is produced
since 2006.
It is available either
with a 126 hp 1.8-liter petrol, or a 170 hp 2.0-liter unit. Engine
output and acceleration are below average, in fact performance is
downgraded comparing with a previous model. However the new Mazda
MX-5 has a better fuel consumption. Both engines come with a
five-speed manual gearboxes, while the 2.0-liter model has an option
of a six-speed manual 'box.
The ride is comfortable
and controlled over broken surfaces, while the cabin remains free
from shakes. This car is impressively agile, while the
rear-wheel-drive arrangement gives slick handling and plenty of
grip. The steering is precise and full of feel.
On the MX-5 windscreen
and the high-backed sports seats isolate the breeze from the driver
and passenger as much as possible. The wind noise is also well
contained with the roof up. However if you live in a cold country,
go for a hard-top Roadster Coupe, rather than the soft-top. The only
minor disappointment is an exhaust note, which sounds like a mad
lawn mover, when revved hard.
Despite that the new
Mazda MX-5 has a price increase, it remains extremely popular. It is
not expensive to run and the fuel consumption is also reasonable.
It's resale values are likely to be strong as well. Reliability
isn't a concern as there are masses of old Mazdas MX-5 on the road
in perfect condition. On of the reasons is in a relatively simple
design and nice build quality.
Inside the car interior
is durable and nicely fitted together. The dash has a classy
appearance. All the major controls are logically laid out and simple
to use. There are also some storage spaces around the driver. Some
of the plastics are not of the highest quality though.
The new Mazda MX-5
received a much improved driving position. Unlike the old model even
the taller drivers can find themselves comfortable.
This car has one of the
easiest-operating drop-tops. The boot is not very large, considering
that there is also no spare wheel, however it can still take a
couple of small bags.
On the safety list there
are twin front and side airbags, while the 2.0-liter model adds
electronic stability control. Safety equipment consists from an
alarm and immobilizer, however the soft-top is obviously easier to
brake in.
Equipment level of the
new Mazda MX-5 is only average. It is offered with electric windows
and mirrors as standard, but that's pretty much everything what you
will get. The top-of-the-range model comes with a leather
upholstery, larger alloy wheels and some other minor trim elements.
Production of the Mazda
MX-5 still continues.
Advantages:
Affordable roadster which has everything that you will expect from a
this type of car. Drives nicely and is cheap to run.
Disadvantages:
Unacceptable performance and it could have more standard goodies.
Verdict: Basic, but well priced
and genuinely fun roadster.
Also consider:
Honda S2000, Opel GT.
