The Ferrari 612 Scaglietti is produced since 2004.

The 612 has a developed version of the 575 Maranello's 5.7-litre V12 engine, and drives through a six-speed manual or a paddle-shift gearbox. In the light, aluminum body of the 612 it provides awesome speed on demand, but just as impressive is how easy the car is to drive in traffic.

The Ferrari 612 has its engine behind the front axle line and its gearbox at the back to aid balance. It attacks corners like a sports car yet shrugs off surface lumps and bumps like a grand tourer. The electronic power steering could do with a little more feel.

Wind noise only becomes apparent at very high speed, and there's not too much road noise. The guttural snarl of the engine is central to a Ferrari's appeal. The V12 is a wonderfully smooth unit that's docile in traffic. You need practice to be totally smooth with the paddle-shift gearbox, but the up changes are decently quick.

Unless you've already signed up for a 612 Scaglietti, you'll be lucky to get one anytime soon. That might force up values initially, but eventually it will be vital to choose the right age and mileage to sell in order to minimize depreciation. It goes without saying that running costs, and most particularly the bills for servicing, will be very steep.

Ferrari's quality continually improves, and the paintwork, trim and assembly of the 612 are superb. The mechanicals are tough, too, but heavy daily use will accelerate your 612's depreciation. One or two test cars developed glitches with their paddle-shift gearboxes, but ours performed faultlessly.

Ferrari claims minimal cabin intrusion in a 60 km/h (40 mph) front offset crash and in a 80 km/h (50 mph) rear-end shunt. But just in case the worst happens, front airbags, intelligent seatbelts and child seat mountings are built in, and the Ferrari 612 has stability control. Tracker system helps the police find the car in case of theft.

It's so easy to get comfortable behind the wheel of the 612 Scaglietti. The seats and steering column adjust electrically, the cabin is snug yet spacious and you've an unusually good view out for a car of this type. The switchgear is well placed and easy to understand, too.

Thanks to its long wheelbase and high roofline, the 612 will just about seat four adults. With a tall driver aboard, anyone behind will have to adopt an indelicate knees-splayed posture, but the angle of the rear seat and available headroom are good. The boot takes a fair amount but is rather irregularly shaped.

The flagship Ferrari is lavishly equipped and beautifully trimmed, but designed so that the essentials for driving take centre stage rather than large monitors or complicated control buttons. You can opt for satellite-navigation and Bluetooth mobile telephone technology in your 612, among other things, but these extras don't dominate the cabin as they might in some cars.

Production of the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti still continues.

Advantages: Very fast, very civilized sporting grand tourer that's surprisingly easy to drive. The first Ferrari you can truly get four people in just.

Disadvantages: Electronic power steering lacks genuine feel and feedback. Waiting lists already run to 18 months.

Verdict: Ferrari V12 Always stirs the soul.

Also consider: Aston Martin DB9, Bentley Continental GT.
