The Skoda Fabia is
produced since 1999. It is available as a hatchback, sedan and
estate.
The Fabia is powered by a wide range of engines.
All
are fine all-rounders, and the 1.4-liter 100 hp 16V is the best
choice. The 64 hp
SDI diesel is sluggish, but the 75 hp and 100 hp turbodiesels offer
plenty of mid-range pull matched to fine economy.
The chassis offers a brilliant compromise between ride
and handling. It soaks up minor imperfections, while giving
excellent body control on undulating roads. Handling and steering
response aren't quite as sharp as in the
Fiesta, but it's agile
enough for most drivers. The Sport model offers no added thrills.
The Fabia convinces you that you're piloting a car
several classes up from a supermini. Few other small cars isolate
you from external noises so effectively, or are so relaxing to drive
on the motorway. The only bugbear is that the petrol engines sound
harsh when you extend them, and the turbodiesels aren't as smooth or
quiet as newer rivals.
Another ace up the Fabia's sleeve. The Skoda holds on
to its purchase price better than many of its peers. Add to that
impressive fuel economy, low servicing costs, and it proves to be one of the cheapest small cars
to run. The Sport model has small bills as it takes the detuned
75 hp 1.4-litre unit.
Some owners have experienced some minor trim rattles
and problems with Skoda's stereo system, but the Fabia is sound
mechanically. Fixtures and fittings are of high quality, too. All
the switchgear operates with a solid, expensive feel.
All Fabias have driver and passenger airbags as
standard, as well as anti-lock brakes. Side airbags are optional.
Not all models come with deadlocks.
The Fabia's dash has a rather austere look, but it's
wonderfully simple and easy to use. The controls are all logically
placed and work well, while there are a minimum of distractions. All
shapes and sizes can get comfortable thanks to plenty of height and
reach adjustment for the steering wheel and a supportive driver's
seat that also adjusts for height.
There's sufficient rear leg and head space for
six-footers, and enough width to sit three without too much
discomfort. The hatchback's boot is sensibly shaped and a good size,
but it's smaller than some of its rivals. The sedan's extended
rear gives it a huge boot.
Classic models do without deadlocks, central locking or
electric windows, but air-con is standard. Ambiente adds electric
front windows, and remote locking. For alloy wheels and cruise
control, step up to Elegance. Sport trim is available on the 75 hp
1.4 and ditches electric windows and central locking in favour of
alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, sports seats and a leather wheel.
Advantages:
The Skoda Fabia is a very grown-up supermini. The cabin is solid and
smart.
Disadvantages: Cheaper models miss basic kit and diesels are noisy.
Verdict: Big on quality and
space, low on price.
