The Chevrolet Matiz is produced since 2005. In some countries it is sold as the Chevrolet Spark.

This small car comes with a choice of two petrol engines. A 0.8-liter three-cylinder unit is coupled with an automatic gearbox. It delivers enough power to keep up with the traffic in town, but feels out of breath on the motorway. Another 1.0-liter engine has slightly more pull, but that's just about perfect for everyday driving. It has to be worked hard on the motorway though.

It's ride is well controlled at any speed. Furthermore the small Matiz absorbs most of the bumps and lumps well. The only problem are large potholes. Because being short and small it suffers from body roll going through the corners. Car's power steering is light enough to make parking easy, but it is still accurate on the motorway.

A smaller three-cylinder engine has an unpleasant exhaust note. The four-cylinder unit is even worse when revved hard, but settles down when cruising. Both wind and road noises are present, but not excessively.

The Chevrolet Matiz is one of the cheapest cars. Running costs are also easy on the pocket. Unfortunately it's residual values are weak. Many of mechanical parts were carried over from the previous model, so reliability shouldn't be a concern.

Inside the cabin standard finish is disappointing, as most of the plastics are shiny and hard to touch. Despite that it seems that everything was built to last. Another disappointment of the cheap interior is a speedometer, which can be difficult to read due to it's position in the center of the dash. Otherwise all the remaining controls are logically laid out. There are a number of oddment spaces around the driver.

Not everyone will find driver's position comfortable, as the steering wheel is fixed and the entry-level model hasn't go a height-adjustable driver's seat.

There is enough head- and legroom for the front passengers, but a narrow cabin means driver and passenger will tend to knock elbows.

Despite being a five-seater the Chevrolet Matiz struggles to take three people across the rear bench. However it can still carry four adults, but the rear headroom will be restricted for tall passengers. The Matiz has a very small boot, but the split folding rear seats add some versatility.

All models come with a twin front airbags and anti-skid brakes. Side airbags are available on the SX trim. Protection against thieves is poor as there are no alarm or deadlocks.

The 0.8-liter model is available only with a basic S trim. It comes with power steering, CD player and central locking. The SE trim comes with a 1.0-liter models and adds front electric windows and driver's seat height adjustments. The most expensive SX trim comes with an air conditioning, electric rear windows and alloy wheels.

Production of the Chevrolet Matiz still continues.

Advantages: The Chevrolet Matiz is nippy in town and easy on the pocket to run.

Disadvantages: Interior quality is disappointing. Steering wheel is fixed, while you have to pay more to get a height adjustable driver's seat. Narrow interior.

Verdict: Great for town, but not for motorways.

Also consider: Nissan Micra, Opel Agila.
