The Volkswagen Beetle is
produced since 1998. It is available as a coupe or convertible.
The VW Beetle is powered
by a wide range of engines, including two 1.9-liter turbodiesels, and turbocharged 1.8-liter
petrol. There is also a 3.2-liter RSI available for the range
topper.
The new Beetle has
nothing in common with the rear-engined original, except the 'retro' design.
It is based on the VW Golf and has the
same solid build quality.
It is relatively silent
inside as you do not hear to much of the wind or road noise, except
the TDIs with noisy engines. Engines with the smaller displacement,
the 1.4-liter in particular, needs to be worked hard on the
motorway.
Beetle should hold it's value
well, as all Volkswagens do. Unfortunately it has higher servicing
costs comparing with the Golf. It is
also not as economical on fuel.
The car is beautifully
made from good materials, that are put together nicely. Interior is
rather stylish. As all VWs it has a very high assembly standards.
It's mechanical parts are already proven and are made to last.
The Beetle comes with a
full range of safety equipment including airbags and electronic
chassis aids. Furthermore it's security systems are quiet
troublesome for thieves to get in and to drive away.
Originally the New Beetle is intended
for 5 persons, although in reality it is a two-seater. The rear
seats are suitable only for kids, furthermore the boot is small as
well. Other drawbacks of the Beetle are not the most comfortable
drivers position and poor visibility. It is quiet tricky while
parking as well. If you prefer practicality, better stick to the
Golf.
During the production
process some engines were renewed for better performance and lower
fuel consumption. Some exterior details were slightly restyled as
well. Chrome trim has been added to the air vents and to the
interior. It also has new colors and interior fabrics. Recently
Beetle comes with an alloy wheels, ABS, CD player and electric
windows as standard.
The New Beetle convertible is produced
since 2002 and comes with a choice of 5 engines.
Production of the Volkswagen
New
Beetle still continues it should be in production till 2009.
Advantages:
Attractive classic looks, with superbly made and trimmed interior.
Furthermore it is well equipped and fun to own.
Disadvantages:
Engines, performance and ride quality are only average. The rear
accommodation was sacrificed for style.
Verdict:
Buy it only for its retro looks.
Also consider:
Audi A3,
MINI.
