The Volvo C30 is produced
since 2006. Currently it is a Volvo's smallest car.
It is available with a
wide range of engines, that have been proven on other Volvos. The
entry level 1.6-liter petrol has enough urge to keep up with the
traffic, as well as the 1.6-liter diesel. There are four diesels in
the engine lineup, so the diesel fans will find something that will
suit them. Unfortunately the D5 models are available with a
five-speed automatic gearbox only, which is rather slow and
unresponsive. A top of the range 2.5-liter T5 unit has a massive
mid-range pull.
The Volvo C30 has a firm
ride, but the things get better at the motorway speed. The ride
softness was sacrificed for a better body control going through the
corners. On the good side there is a well weighted and responsive
steering.
At the motorway speed
some wind rustles build up around the door mirrors. Some road noise
is also present riding over coarse surface. Petrol engines are
hushed, but the diesels are rather noisy.
The Volvo C30 is cheaper
to buy than it's closest rivals - the
Audi A3
and the
BMW 1-series. It's fuel
consumption is reasonable, furthermore there are a number of diesel
engines to choose from. Servicing costs also shouldn't brake your
wallet. Residual values are likely to be strong. It is worth
mentioning that Volvo has a good reliability record.
Inside the car there is a
quality built-to-last feel. Interior plastics are soft to touch,
while switches and buttons work with precision. Dashboard design is
similar to that on the larger Volvos. In generally everything is
good except some fiddly switches.
Driver's seat and the
steering wheel have a wide range of adjustments, so it is easy to
get comfortable in front of the wheel.
There is plenty of space
for the front passengers, while two adults can get themselves rather
comfy on the rear seats. Unfortunately the C30 has got two
individual rear seats, so it won't take the third person. The boot
is small, but well shaped.
Volvo is famous for it's
passenger safety and the C30 is not an exception. Every model comes
with six airbags, stability control, anti-whiplash head restraints.
Thieves should be kept away by deadlocks and a visible VIN number.
On the basic equipment
list there is a climate control, electric front windows, alloy
wheels. The SE trim adds cruise control, while the SE Sport comes
with larger alloys and a bodykit. The SE Lux adds leather upholstery
and heated front seats.
Production of the Volvo
C30 still continues.
Advantages: The
Volvo C30 is well built, well equipped and should hold it's value
well.
Disadvantages:
Ride is firm, while the rear seats are intended for two passengers
only, and the boot is also small.
Verdict: A stylish car for
stylish people.
Also consider:
Audi A3,
BMW
1-series.
