The latest model of the
Toyota Corolla was produced between 2001 and 2006. It is available as a
hatchback, sedan or estate. In
2004 it received a minor facelift.
The Corolla is powered by
three petrol and two diesel engines. The entry-level 1.4-liter
turbocharged diesel isn't quick, but pulls well. The 2.0-liter
diesel is a willing performer and fuel saver. The Corolla T-Sport is
powered by the top of the range
1.8-liter
Celica's petrol engine,
developing 192 hp and delivering excellent performance at high revs.
The Toyota Corolla
handles and grips well. It's cornering balance is not as good as the
VW Golf's, but it still has a
responsive steering and good body stability.
Corolla's cabin is well
isolated from wind and road noises, however some engine noise is
heard at the motorway speeds. Surprisingly the 1.4-liter diesel is
exceptionally quiet, but the 2.0-liter D-4D will let you know about
it. The T-Sport model is rather noisy.
The Toyota Corolla isn't
the cheapest car in the category, however it features good fuel
economy and good resale values as well. Furthermore the Toyota is
well known for it's excellent reliability, so you can expect this
car to run for ages.
Inside the cabin
everything is made up to the highest standard from the classy
materials, although the interior is not as smart as of the class
leaders. A dash layout is very clear.
Driver's position is
comfortable thanks to both ways adjustable seat and steering wheel.
The Corolla is relatively small, but there is still enough of the
head- shoulder- and legroom for the rear passengers. The boot is
small, but well shaped.
Toyota Corolla features
twin front, side and curtain airbags as standard, as well as the
ABS. Furthermore it has an improved anti-theft security measures.
Even entry-level Corollas
are well equipped. It comes with air-conditioning, electric front
windows and electric mirrors, CD player and remote central locking
as standard.
Advantages: It is
one of the best cars in the class, featuring excellent reliability.
Disadvantages:
The entry-level turbodiesel needs to be worked hard.
Also consider:
Honda Civic,
Mazda 3.
