The Renault Megane is produced
since 2002. It is available in convertible, estate and
sedan body styles.
There are a number of
petrol and diesel engines developed for the Renault Megane II.
Probably the most impressive engine is the 2.0-liter diesel. It has
both fantastic performance and fuel consumption. The 2.0-liter
petrol also has plenty of punch, while the most powerful
turbocharged unit develops 225 hp.
The ride is supple,
although it can’t mask all potholes and rutted surfaces. This
cushiness is evident in some lean in tight corners, but it holds the
road well. However, the electric power steering is devoid of
feedback, and strong self-centring means you have to keep a firm
grip on the wheel.
It is surprising, but the
1.6-liter petrol is noisier than 1.9 or 2.0-liter turbodiesels. The
wind noise is noticeable when the car reaches 100 km (60 mph) limit
and there is some road noise coming from the rear suspension, but
comparing to it's rivals the Renault Megane is quiet.
The Renault Megane is one
of the best value-for-money cars in the class. It is not expensive
to buy and servicing costs are reasonable. Furthermore it features a
good fuel economy as well. To top it up it is worth mentioning that
the Megane achieved a 5-star Euro NCAP crash test safety rating. It
was the first car in it's class to do so. A number of innovative
technologies were used in this car.
Inside the Megane
everything is made up to the highest standard from the top quality
materials. All the surfaces are soft to touch and are fitted nicely.
The driver sits high, but
the steering wheel can be adjusted both ways. The controls are well
placed and easy to use.
The Renault Megane II is
larger than it's predecessor, but it do not helps for the rear
passengers. The rear seats are more suitable for children, as
they lack legroom. However it features a large and well shaped boot.
Eight airbags are fitted
on the five-door models, and even up to ten on the three-door.
Anti-lock braces are standard across the range. Furthermore every
model has an extensive list of passive safety features.
The Renault Megane comes
in five different trim levels. Two bottom models miss an
air-conditioning, CD player and split rear seats. However all models
are equipped with front and rear electric windows, rain sensitive
automatic wipers and other goodies.
Production of the Renault
Megane II still continues. In 2006 was facelifted and received a
revised interior trim and a new front suspension similar to the RenaultSport model.
The
Megane RenaultSport or RS models have an improved handling,
sportier bodystyle and are completed with 2.0-liter turbocharged
engine, delivering 225 hp, and accelerating to 100 km/h (60 mph) in
just 6.5 seconds.
Advantages:
Distinctive looks, stand out from the crowd. Good quality and new
diesels are refined and punchy.
Disadvantages:
Rear knee space is limited. Despite looks, Megane is bland to drive.
Verdict: Sharp looks and
class-leading safety.

Peugeot 307.
