The refined Audi A3
hatchback is produced since 2003. It is available as a 3- or 5-door
hatchback.
The Audi A3 is powered by
a wide range of engines. The entry-level 1.6-liter petrol delivers 102 hp,
but it needs to be worked
hard, while the top of the range 3.2-liter V6 has a good sporty
stance. However the star buy would be any of the turbodiesel
engines, as they offer the best balance between performance and fuel
economy.
The Audi A3 is not as
entertaining to drive as it's rival the
BMW
Compact, but it is still fun. It has a good grip and body control.
Overall handling is good, but it
could give more feedback to the driver. Ride is firm on the
entry-level versions, but it is not uncomfortable. The only exceptions
are models fitted with sport suspension.
Unfortunately the turbodiesel
engines are noise when worked hard, however it fades at the motorway
speed. Car's interior is
also well isolated from wind and road noises. In general despite
it's small size the Audi A3 is well suited for long trips.
The Audi A3 will cost you slightly
more than the
Volkswagen Golf it is
based on, because of it's prestige badge. However it will keep it's value
well and running costs should be reasonable for all but the V6
models.
Inside the car everything
is made from the quality materials that are put together nicely. All
controls are logically positioned around the driver and are easy to
read and to use. Driver's position is also comfortable.
The A3 offers plenty of
space for the front passengers, but the rear accommodation is
limited and is more suitable for children rather than adults. The
boot is spacious and should take all your luggage.
The small Audi comes with
a twin front, side and curtain air bags as standard. Furthermore
every car is fitted with the electronic stability control and
electronic brake distribution systems. On the standard security
equipment list there are deadlocks and alarm.
The Audi A3 is available
in four trim
variants. Every car comes with front electric windows and alloy
wheels, while upgrading to the SE or a Sport trim will add
air-conditioning and a CD-player. The S line models are
completed with aggressive body kit.
Production of the
Audi A3 still continues.
Advantages:
The Audi A3 drives nicely, furthermore it has appealing looks inside
and out and is built to the highest standards.
Disadvantages:
Too expensive to buy. Steering isn't as precise as on some of it's
German rivals.
Verdict:
Good, but costs more than
VW Golf it is
based on.
Also consider:
BMW Compact,
Mercedes Sports Coupe.
