The Renault Laguna II
was produced between 2001 and 2007. It was available as a hatchback or estate. In 2005
this large family car was facelifted.
Engine range of the
Laguna starts with the 1.9-liter turbo diesel. This engine is
economical, but underpowered for a large car. The entry-level
1.6-liter petrol performs better and is sufficient driving in town.
The 1.9-liter turbo diesel is an excellent choice. There is also a
new 2.0-liter diesel, developing 150 hp. A range topping 3.0-liter
petrol has an impressive performance, even though it is coupled with
an automatic gearbox.
The Laguna features a
smooth ride and a well suited handling. It is very stable on any
type of roads. Furthermore the ride comfort is perfect over town
potholes and bumps. However, the steering is short on precision and
feedback. The GT version comes with sports suspension that improves
handling.
Inside the car wind and
road noises are well suppressed. Engines are also quiet even as the
revs go up.
Considering that the
Renault Laguna is one of the cheapest cars in it's class, it gives
you a very good value for money. It's fuel consumption won't brake
your budget. Resale values are also respectable. Servicing costs are
not higher than average. However it is worth mentioning that a
number of engine problems were reported.
Interior of the car is
classy refined. It carried over a quality standard set for the
previous model. It's controls are well placed and smooth in
operation. Furthermore there are plenty of oddments space.
Inside the car there is
slightly cramped feel. But it is worth mentioning that the Renault
Laguna is not as large and spacious than most of the family cars.
Driver's position is good. The only bad thing is a slightly
restricted rear visibility.
At the back taller adults
will find the headroom restricted. Foot room for the rear passengers
is also poor. Apart that the car is versatile enough. The Laguna has
a well-shaped boot.
The Laguna received a
five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating. It was achieved by a good
standard safety equipment, including four airbags, side curtains,
anti-lock brakes and strong shell. It also comes with full list of
security features to keep the thieves away and to make it easy to
identify if stolen.
The Renault Laguna
has some unusual goodies like keyless
entry and starting. All cars come with an air-conditioning, electric
windows, heated mirrors and a CD player. The GT trim adds satellite
navigation and leather upholstery. Navigation trim come with a
standard satellite navigation as well.
Advantages:
Stylish inside and out. The cabin has plenty of space for five and
comes with loads of safety gear.
Disadvantages:
The smaller petrol engines struggle on the motorway. Rear head space
is restricted.
Verdict: Laguna is
comfortable and stylish cruiser.
Also consider:
Citroen C5,
Peugeot 407.
