The Citroen C5 is
produced since 2001. It is available as a hatchback or estate. In
2004 it received a major facelift.
Petrol engines start with
a 1.8-liter unit, then there's a punchy 2.0-litre, and expensive to
own and to run, but
powerful 3.0-liter V6 unit. The entry-level 90 hp turbodiesel is
underpowered, while another 107 hp diesel is smooth and refined, and
has a strong mid-range pull. The 2.2 HDi is a star buy with the best
balance of acceleration and fuel economy. Apearently all C5 engines
have good manners, but the diesels are the pick.
The C5 is completed with
the Citroen's Hydractive suspension, which is one of the most
advanced and smooth-riding suspension systems around, wafting over
bumps. This makes it a great cruiser for long motorway journeys.
However there is too much body lean going through corners. Steering
is short on feedback.
There is some wind noise
at the motorway speed, but the suspension and road noises are
absent.
Running costs for the
Citroen C5 are reasonable, but the residual values are weak. The
3.0-liter V6 model is not only expensive to run, but it is worth
only third of it's original price after three years. Diesel-powered
models keep their value better, but definitely can't match the class
leaders.
The new C5 build quality
is better than previous Citroens, but some plastics and trim details
are disappointing. Some owners also consider their C5 interior
quality as poor.
The driver's seat has height
adjustment and the steering wheel adjusts for both rake and reach.
The interior design is distinctive but comfortable. All major
controls are logically placed.
The C5 is very spacious.
It's wide body comfortably accommodates five adults. However the
roof's slant reduces rear headroom. A big boot is well shaped and
has an easy access.
The Citroen C5 gained
maximum 5-star EURO NCAP rating. It has a good standard safety kit,
with front, side and curtain airbags, and an airbag to protect
driver's knees and shins. Anti-lock brakes are also standard.
Furthermore there are front and rear crumple zones. Security kit
includes deadlocks and marked parts.
Even the low trim levels
come with plenty of standard prestige goodies. The VTX+ trim adds
satellite navigation. Optional equipment includes device that helps
prevent drivers from falling asleep at the wheel by detecting
unintentional lane changes when the indicators are not activated.
The driver's seat then vibrates on the side corresponding
to the line crossed.
Production of the Citroen
C5 still continues. The C5 of the second generation is expected in
2007.
Advantages:
Citroen's clever air-and-gas suspension provides comfort normally
associated with luxury cars.
Disadvantages:
Not as well put together as some rivals. The gearchange in manual
cars has a notchy action.
Verdict: Big space,
comfort, but some cheap plastics.
Also consider:
Peugeot 406,
Renault Laguna.
