The BMW 3-series is
produced since 2005. It is available as sedan, coupe, convertible
and estate.
All engines on the new
3-series provide strong performance. The diesel engines are more
attractive than ever, as they feature excellent fuel economy and
are willing performers. The best all-rounder is the 2.0-liter diesel,
delivering 163 hp. The hottest is the BMW
335i model, delivering 300 hp and accelerating to 100 km/h (60 mph)
in just 5.5 seconds. Manual gearbox, comes as
standard, while automatic is optional.
The BMW 3-series has a
sharpest steering in the class. Furthermore the steering is accurate
and gives a good feedback to the driver. Excellent body control and
strong grip give it poise through corners. However a firm suspension
makes you aware of bumps, but it's not uncomfortable.
The BMW 3-series has a
well isolated cabin from the outside noises. Engines are silent,
however you can still tell, weather it is diesel or petrol, but you
can barely hear it even as the revs go up. Some wind noise is
noticeable at high speed, but the road noise is well kept away.
Consequently the quiet 3-series cars are great as a long-distance
cruisers.
The 3-series BMW is more
expensive to buy than similar Audi or Jaguar models, but it is one
of the best cars in this class. It's low running costs and rock
solid mechanical reliability make it a good choice, furthermore it
will keep it's value well.
Inside the cabin
everything is built-to-last from the top quality materials. There
are numerous trim combinations. The dash layout is clear and easy to
use, unless you will go for the fiddly iDrive control system. The
steering wheel and drivers seat both have a good range of
adjustments.
The rear passengers have
enough legroom, but the headroom in not sufficient. However there
is a large boot, but it's shape could be better.
There is plenty of safety
equipment inside the 3-seris BMW. It comes with front, side and
curtain airbags as standard. Furthermore an ABS, run-flat tyres and
stability control system are standard as well. It is worth
mentioning, that it received a maximum five stars rating in the Euro
NCAP crash tests. Thieves are kept away by deadlocks.
The basic 3-series models
are fitted with air-conditioning, front and rear electric windows
and CD player. The ES trim adds alloy wheels and foglights. The
top-specification cars come with larger alloy wheels, multi-function
steering wheel, traction control and parking sensors. Options
includes voice-operated controls and headlights that swivel around
corners.
Production of the BMW
3-series still continues. The new M3 model will be available since
2007.
Advantages: The
BMW 3-series feature excellent drive quality and perfect body
balance going through corners. The engines are strong, yet
economical. Interior refinement is excellent.
Disadvantages:
The rear headroom is limited. The car is pricey to buy.
Verdict: Brilliant to drive,
but considering it's price equipment list could be longer.
Also consider:
Audi A4,
Mercedes-Benz C-class.
