The new Audi A4 was produced between 2000 and 2008. It was available as a sedan, estate (A4 Avant) and convertible (Audi A4 Cabriolet). There was also a performance version of this car - the Audi S4. In 2008 this car was replaced with the new model.

There are more than 10 engines to choose from. The entry-level 1.6-liter petrol and 1.9-liter turbodiesel are a good choice for driving in town, but the star buy is the 2.0-liter petrol, which is swift and flexible. The range topping 3.0-liter turbodiesel and 3.2-liter petrol offer the best performance, but are thirsty on fuel. In general engines of the new A4 are well refined, faster and consume less fuel, than the older ones.

Both front- and all-wheel drive models of the Audi A4 grip well and corner well, but the steering is light and it is not as fun to drive as it's rivals. However it rides comfortably over the most surfaces.

Diesel engines of the A4 are noisy as the revs go up, yet the petrol units have a pleasant sporty exhaust note. Wind and road noises are well isolated.

The new Audi A4 is cheaper to buy than the BMW or Mercedes of the similar class. It also has a strong resale value. Running costs are reasonable. It is worth mentioning, that Audi is famous for building reliable cars.

Inside the cabin clarity, quality and comfort is preserved in the new A4. The most significant change is the center of the steering wheel, reflecting the shape of the radiator grille.

The new Audi A4 has a small size increase over the previous model. It is also one of the roomiest compact executive cars. However space for the rear passengers is restricted by a transmission tunnel, so only two adults can get themselves comfortable at the back.

The A4 has a latest and cleverest stability system. Furthermore it comes with front and side airbags and anti-lock brakes as standard. It's protection against thieves is excellent.

The base model lacks a few essentials, like CD player, but the SE and S trims come with plenty of kit. There is a long list of options, including satellite-navigation, rain sensitive wipers, and adaptive lights, shining around the corners.

Advantages: Huge range of engines. All are refined and frugal. Fine build quality.

Disadvantages: A4 is not as much to drive as BMW and the ride is not quite as plush as Mercedes.

Verdict: One of the best built car in this class.

Also consider: BMW 3-series, Jaguar X-type.
