The Opel Signum
was produced between 2003 and 2007.
This car is powered by a
number of petrol and diesel engines. However to run behind none of
these units are well suited to the car. Most of them are too
sluggish and haven't got the pace of their rivals, while remaining
are thirsty on fuel. The best all-rounders would be the 2.0-liter
turbocharged petrol or a 3.0-liter turbodiesel.
The Opel Signum shares it's
platform with the
Opel Vectra station
wagon. It has a soft suspension, making it a comfortable cruiser.
However some body lean is present going through the corners,
especially at speed. It's steering is too light to give enough
feedback, but it makes driving in the city easier.
The Signum has a similar
level of refinement as the Vectra. It's
engines are smooth, but become noisy as the revs go up. However wind
and road noises are well contained.
The Opel Signum is one of
the cheapest executive cars on the market. It's price can be
compared to a well-equipped family car. It's running and
servicing costs are also reasonable. However resale values are
weak.
Inside the car soft
furnishings and damped controls are the order of the day. All
controls except the gearlever move with slick precision. Switchgear
layout is orderly, logical and neat.
Drivers seat is
comfortable and easily adjustable. The steering wheel also adjusts
for height and reach. The dash is similar to the
Vectra's and looks rather cheap for an
executive car. Although controls are well positioned and easy to
use. The Signum also has a good all-round visibility.
Despite classified as a
five-seater the middle rear seat is best kept for children. It's
FlexSpace system enables the seats to be folded individually. The
middle rear seat can be folded for better comfort. The
two outer rear seats slide back, so you can choose between legroom
and boot space.
Every model comes with an
impressive standard safety kit. Twin front, side and curtain
airbags, running the length of the cabin, are standard. Even the
base model comes with the anti-lock brakes and traction control.
There is also a serious security equipment, including an alarm,
engine immobilizer and deadlocks fitted across the range.
The entry-level trim
offers lots of goodies at a low price. It comes with alloy wheels,
satellite navigation, air conditioning and cruise control. More
expensive models add sports suspension, part-leather trim, stability
control and heated front seats.
Advantages:
Massive amount of rear legroom for two and the boot is also very
generous. Efficient engine range.
Disadvantages:
Opel badge does not convey the image of more prestigious brands.
Drive lacks any sparkle.
Verdict: An expensive family
car, but not more than that.
Also consider:
Peugeot 607,
Renault Vel Satis.
