The Jaguar S-type
was produced
between 2000 and 2008. It was available as a sedan. The Jaguar
S-type was replaced with the new XF.
There is a choice of five
petrols and one diesel engine for this car. Probably the most
welcome is a 2.7-liter diesel which ample mid-range pull and is the
best all-rounder. Even the entry-level 2.5-liter petrol performs
well. A 4.2-liter unit has a lightning performance, while it's
supercharged version powers the R performance model.
The Jaguar S-type is
surprisingly agile, but it still lacks the poise of the BMW
5-Series. The S-type rides comfortably, except that it picks up some
urban potholes. Body roll is well contained, while it steers well.
There is an optional suspension pack available, which provides
sharper handling, but the ride becomes less settled.
All petrol engines emit a
hearty growl at low revs, but are hushed at the motorway speed. The
turbodiesel unit is also very refined and emits little extra noise.
Road noise is well isolated, but some wind rustles are present at
the motorway speed.
Jaguar's prices undercut
those of it's German rivals. It's diesel engine is affordable to run
thanks to a superior fuel economy. None of the petrol version is
distinguishes in fuel economy however. The S-type can't match resale
values comparing with it's German rivals too. Reliability was the
main concern on the previous Jaguars, but the things are getting
better.
For the last couple of
years Jaguar has worked hard to improve it's build quality and
finish. Both of these were disappointing on it's previous models.
Interior of the S-type now is much better, but some minor details
are still not up to scratch. The dash is clearly laid out, but as
far as it is overloaded with functions it might become tricky to
find the right button. There could also be more oddments space
inside the cabin.
It is easy to get
comfortable in front of the wheel. Driver's seat has got electric
adjustments. The steering wheel is also electrically adjusted for
rake and reach. Furthermore there are optional electrically
adjustable pedals.
Four adults will fit with
ease inside the Jaguar S-type, but the rear passenger might find
headroom a little tight. The boot is long, but it's access is
restricted.
The S-type comes with
twin front, side and curtain airbags, front head restraints.
Stability control and anti-skid brakes are also standard. It is also
stuffed with security equipment, which makes it a hard nut to drive
away.
The Jaguar S-type comes
equipment, that executives expect. It has climate and cruise
controls and plenty of other goodies. All but the entry-level models
come with leather upholstery and automatic gearboxes. A wide range
of options include satellite navigation, distant-sensing cruise
control, voice-activated controls and even a TV.
Advantages: Looks
well, handles well accelerates with ease. The 2.7-liter diesel is
particularly great.
Disadvantages:
Some cheap plastics in the early models. Still not on the par with
German rivals.
Verdict: The S-type has
got better and better.

BMW 5-series.
