The Bentley Azure is produced
since 2006. It is available as a convertible.
Azure is powered by a
mighty 6.75-liter petrol, developing over 450 horsepower. This
engine has a stunning acceleration for a convertible, that weights
nearly three tonnes. 0-100 km/h (0-60 mph) in just 6 seconds.
Surprisingly engine is mated with a 4-speed automatic gearbox, but
it simply do not needs any more gears. Furthermore it do not feels
savage when it accelerates, but still has vast reserves of power and
torque. Caress the throttle at any speed and in any gear and it just
goes.
The new Bentley Azure is
based on the
Arnage, which means its
fundamental design dates back to 1999, while the old Azure could
trace its roots back to 1980. That's why it rides superbly and feels
incredibly structural stiff for a luxury convertible. For a large
and bulky car it even handles. Sure it you will try to change
direction in a hurry it's not going to work. On the other hand
steering is fluid, well weighted and very precise. It still copes
well with twisty mountain roads.
At the motorway speed
with the roof down and windows up conversation is still possible.
The Bentley Azure is
unique proposition on the market. At least until Rolls-Royce will
offer a Phantom convertible. Though people who buy Bentleys usually
have five to twelve cars in their garages. Azure costs more than most of the supercars and it's running costs are horrendous.
Furthermore no more than 400 cars are built annually, so people are
actually paying for exclusivity. Reliability is not up to the
scratch though.
The Bentley Azure is
hand-built using the finest materials only. Styling is very
conservative. Creamy, soft-touch leather covers the seats, door
panels and part of the dash. Wood in this car seems right and
proper. However switchgear takes time to get used to.
Steering wheel adjusts
only for height, what is strange for a car with such a price tag.
Roof of the Bentley Azure
has been beautifully engineered. It folds and unfolds in less than
25 seconds. Surprisingly the roof is canvas rather than steel,
otherwise it would have spoiled the lines and added weight.
The Azure is a genuine
4-seater. It's cabin is a special place to spend time in. There is
plenty of room in any direction. Boot is vast enough to take all the
luggage.
The Bentley Azure
features some of the electronic gadgets you expect from a modern
car, including satellite navigation and reversing camera, but that's
about it, as it isn't aimed for the young generation. Typical buyers
of the Azure are in their late 50s.
Production of the Bentley
Azure still continues.
Advantages: The
Bentley Azure has massive presence, amazing performance and
beautiful cabin.
Disadvantages: Not as good as
cheaper Bentley GT convertible. Horrendous price and running costs.
Verdict: A unique proposition
of supremely luxurious land yacht.
