The Bentley Arnage is produced
since 2001. The Arnage R is the base model, while it is also
available as an extended-wheelbase version Arnage RL limousine.
The both models come with
a 6.7-liter BMW V8 engine, delivering 405 hp. It has stunning
acceleration for a car with weights over 2.5 tones. The Arnage T is
a sportier model, featuring an uprated engine, which delivers 457
hp. The T model has a slightly different styling. All engines are
coupled with an automatic gearbox.
The Arnage has a very
soft ride, but cornering might be tricky for such a bulky car with
the rear driven wheels. Going through the corners there is an
excessive tail tweak. It is much more suitable for relaxed hot-rod
cruising. Steering is light.
Despite it's high
performance, most of the noises are well contained. However wind and
road noises are more noticeable than on some of it's rivals.
This luxury car will hit
hard on the owner's pocket. It's more expensive than the BMW, Jaguar
or Mercedes-Benz of the same class, that only lack it's prestige.
Running and servicing for the Bentley Arnage are crushing. It will
also cost you a fortune to insure such car. Another heart attack for
the owners is Arnages resale values. It will be worth only half of
it's value after three years. Much of it's mechanical components are
proven though.
Bentley's interior is
classy and companies craftsmanship is unmatched. Materials can be
customized to suit every client.
Leather and wood are nicely matched.
Great attention to details and plenty of luxury touches is the way
Bentley builds it's prestige cars. Unfortunately switchgear is
scattered around the cabin and ergonomics sacrificed for fashion.
Driving position is high
and it lacks adjustments. The front seats could also give more side
support in cornering. Most of the Arnage's rivals offer more
satisfaction at this point.
The rear accommodation is
adequate for most people. Rear head- and legroom could be improved
though, in case owner prefers to hire a personal chauffeur. The boot
is smaller than
Ford Mondeo's.
On the safety list there are
twin front, side and curtain airbags. Anti-lock brakes with traction
control are also standard. It also features a high level of security
kit to keep the thieves away.
The Bentley Arnage has
got everything luxury car buyers might expect. Climate control and
satellite navigation are just basics comparing with a terrific
stereo and other goodies. The Arnage RL limousine comes with armored
elements, while you can customize this car with an unbelievable
range of options, just be ready to pay for it.
Production of the Bentley
Arnage still continues.
Advantages: As
British as roast beef, except most Arnage models come with extra-hot
horseradish performance from V8.
Disadvantages:
Crushing running costs prohibit ownership for even some wealthy
drivers. Fails to satisfy on practical levels.
Verdict: Stick on Rule
Britannia and just smile.
Also consider:
Maybach 57,
Rolls-Royce Phantom.
