The Audi A8 of the
second generation is produced since 2004. It was also slightly restyled in 2005.
The entry-level 3.0-liter
V6 petrol was replaced by a new 3.2-liter FSI unit. It has a strong
performance, while the 3.7- and 4.2-liter petrols are even more
punchier. There is also a refined 6.0-liter W12 unit, which develops
450 hp and delivers impressive performance. Also there was
introduced a 4.2-liter diesel engine. Currently it is the most
powerful diesel, Audi has offered in a passenger car. A pick of the
bunch would be a modest 3.0-liter TDI, which is smooth, refined and
the most fuel efficient. All models, except the 3.2-liter, are
completed with an all-wheel-drive through a six-speed automatic
gearbox with an option of sequential manual shifts.
Audi's adaptive air-suspension
system has four settings. It handles tidily for it's size. Audi's A8
speed-sensitive power steering makes it easy to drive in town, but
it is short on feedback at higher speeds. Body control is good for
such a big car.
Cabin of the A8 is well
isolated from the outside noises. Road noise is absent, while
minimal wind noise at motorway speed is only noticeable because of
the absence of any other noises. Even under hard acceleration
engines issue only subdued growl.
The Audi A8 is more
affordable than it's BMW and Mercedes rivals, but it isn't cheap.
Petrol engines return poor fuel economy, although things are better
with diesels. Residual values cannot match the
Mercedes-Benz
S-class. Servicing is also expensive, but most of the mechanical
components are revised of the previous car's, so should be
trouble-free.
The Audi A8 has an
excellent build quality. Inside the cabin there is a rock solid feel
and all the materials are of excellent quality. All the main
controls and instruments are easy to reach. However a single knob
for the stereo, satellite navigation and suspension settings takes
time to get used to.
Driver's position has
electric adjustments for the steering wheel and the seat. The seat
itself is comfortable and supportive.
The Audi A8 has a huge
interior space, especially in the extended wheelbase model. Head-
and legroom for all the occupants is superb. Even tall persons can
stretch out on the rear seats in absolute comfort. The boot is deep,
long and well shaped.
This car comes with all
the safety equipment you would expect from an executive sedan. Eight
airbags are fitted as standard across the range, as well as
anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and
stability control. Security equipment is comprehensive too.
Even the entry-level
models of the Audi A8 are fitted with a leather trim, climate
control, satellite navigation, parking sensors, CD changer, alloy
wheels and voice controls. Top of the range models are completed
with sportier suspension and trim.
Production of the Audi A8
still continues.
Advantages: One of
the most handsome cars in this class and big on refinement. Superb
build and masses of cabin space.
Disadvantages:
Some buyers will prefer the image and presence of a Jaguar or
Mercedes. Pricey to run.
Verdict: The Audi A8 now ranks
among the very best luxury cars.
Also consider:
BMW 7-series,
Mercedes-Benz S-class.
