The Audi R8 is produced since 2006. So far it is the first supercar produced by Audi. The R8 is powered by a rear-mounted 4.2-liter V8 direct injection engine, delivering 420 horsepower. Audi went for an aluminum instead of carbon fiber, other supercarscars are made of. The R8 hits 100 km/h (60 mph) in 4.2 seconds, while it's top speed is over 300 km/h (187 mph). The Audi R8 has an all-wheel-drive. It's ride is superbly balance. This car has bags of traction as well as cornering grip. Chassis has minimal body roll, while the ride is extremely comfortable. Furthermore there are plenty of electronic drivers aids and extra powerful brakes to keep you out of trouble. The V8 engine is surprisingly inaudible. There is only a minimal wind noise presence as well. The R8 is attractively priced comparing with other supercars. Audi sold thousand of the R8s before anyone had even driven it, so residual values will be rock solid. On the downside there are aluminum panels, that are extremely pricey to repair. Running costs are reasonable, however you will get a claimed average fuel consumption only if you will drive like granny. Car's quality of engineering is unsurpassed, furthermore it uses an already proven V8 engine, so the R8 should be trouble-free. Inside the car there is there is a great attention to details as is on all Audis measured by tight fit and finish and quality materials. Many of the controls are carried over from other models. There are also plenty of nice interior details that reveal car's true purpose, including carbon fiber door pulls and aluminum detailing. Getting in front of the wheel might be tricky because of the overall car's height, however once you are in there is plenty of leg and shoulder room. Seats are supportive and a flat-bottom steering wheel emphasis on the sporty theme. The front visibility is good, but reversing might be tricky. Supercar is not the best choice if you want some practicality, but the R8 is better than most. Some storage space is available behind the seats, while a large suitcase will fit under the bonnet. The Audi R8 comes with a set of four airbags and all electronic driver's aid available on the market as standard. However the best safety is a huge grip and impressive braking power. Thieves will have no interest in this car as it is going to be very hard to sell. The R8 has got all the essentials you will expect from a supercar, however extras are really expensive. Options include semi-automatic gearbox, adaptive suspension, electric seats, satellite navigation. You can even specify ambient lighting to the engine under it's glass cover. However for the price of all extras available you might buy as well an entry-level executive car. Production of the Audi R8 still continues.
Advantages: Staggering performance and brilliant handling. Disadvantages: Semi-automatic gearbox is expensive as well as jerky at low speeds. Verdict: It is the fastest Audi ever built. Also consider: Lamborghini Gallardo, Porsche 911 Carrera 4, Ferrari F430.
