The Citroen C3 is produced since 2002. There is a number of engines to choose from for this car. The underpowered 1.1-liter petrol is best suited for driving in town. Every engine better than this one will perform well. A pick of the bunch is a 1.4-liter petrol, while the range-topping 1.6-liter unit is flexible and provides excellent pace. Some models are available with a Sensodrive paddle-shift gearbox, unfortunately it is too jerky and should be avoided. Some changes were made to the Citroen C3 suspension in 2005. It's ride became more absorbent, but not as comfy as on the Renault Clio or Skoda Fabia's. The C3's handling can't match the best either. It lacks grip and there is excessive body roll going through the corners. Steering could also give more feedback. Engine noise is impressively suppressed, while diesels are one of the quietest in this class. Road noise is also well kept away. Unfortunately it fails to suppress wind noise, caused by the bulky shape of it's windscreen and door mirrors. The Citroen C3 isn't cheap to buy, but it's running costs are reasonable on most models. Despite that it's resale values are below average. Citroen has a reputation for building one of the best diesel engines, and petrols are usually also trouble-free. However in general car's reliability is only average. The C3's interior doesn't feel as classy as some of it's rivals, like the Renault Clio. Dashboard layout is simple, but there is some fuss with the digital instruments. In front of the wheel there is an MPV-like feel, because of the raised driving position, but that's not to all tastes. Steering wheel has adjustments for height and reach. Driver's seat also adjusts for height on all but the cheapest models. The dome-like roof create a pleasant airy feel. There is plenty of head- and legroom for the front passengers, but the rear accomodation is cramped. The boot is a little small. Furthermore it has a high loading lip. A split 60/40 rear seats extend practicality, but it is impossible to create a flat loading bay. All Citroens C3 come with front airbags and anti-lock brakes as standard. Most of them also have side airbags, but the curtain airbags as well as stability control are available on the VTR models only. Most of the models have deadlocks. Besides that the C3 is a hard nut to drive away. The entry-level C3 comes with front electric windows and remote central locking, but that's about it. The rest trim levels add air conditioning, and electric door mirrors, while the top of the range models have some high-tech goodies. Production of the Citroen C3 still continues. There is also a C3 convertible known as the Citroen C3 Pluriel.
Advantages: The Citroen C3 is fun to drive, while it's engines are punchy and inaudible. This car offers a fine blend of comfort and refinement. Disadvantages: An MPV-like driving position won't suit everyone. Cramped rear accomodation. Some trims feel flimsy. Verdict: The drive doesn't match the funky looks. Also consider: Ford Fiesta, Skoda Fabia.
