The Volkswagen Golf V is produced since 2003. There is a wide range of fine and reliable engines. The best choice would be 1.6-liter FSI direct injection petrol with 115 hp or 2.0-liter turbodiesel with 150 hp. The last mentioned features an outstanding fuel economy for it's capacity and acceleration speed, although is a bit noisy. The strongest performer is a 2.0-liter GTI, delivering 200 hp, which continues the Golf's hot hatch traditions. Steering is sharp. The car is stable at speed and easily controlled as the power steering gets weightier with speed, unfortunately it does not give enough feedback to the driver. The ride is a bit firm in town, as the reliability of suspension was preferred to the comfort. It is a common feature of all VW Golf's. It is worth mentioning that the front wheel drive versions have good grip and traction, so it is not worth paying more for a four wheel drive. The VW Golf has a very strong resale values due to it's popularity. The VW recommended oneself well for building reliable and fuel efficient engines, undemanding mechanics, practicality and always low servicing costs. As for the noises, all VW diesels are not the sweetest thing to hear as the turbocharger kicks in at the high revs. The 2.0-liter petrol is relatively silent, but the 1.6 petrol makes you hear about it as you push harder. In general sound isolation is good on VW Golf V and you won't hear many wind or road noise. The Volkswagen Golf V sets new standards for build and trim quality. The Mk. V has everything, what you got used to in previous models. Most of controls are smooth, but the manual gearshift tends to balk a bit. A larger size of the new model comparing with the Golf IV translates into more space inside. Driver's position is comfortable as you can adjust both steering wheel and seat. Unfortunately one of the drawbacks remain in the stout screen pillars, creating blind spots as before. Rear passengers benefit from the better access to the rear and now there is enough space for three. The boot became even bigger. Every VW Golf V comes with six airbags, ABS and stability control. There are also active front head restraints to minimize whiplash injuries. Deadlocks and remote locking are come as standard and SE models and above are fitted with an alarm. Standard fit also includes electric front windows and mirrors, and CD player. Now the S trim comes with an air-conditioning. The SE features alloy wheels, cruise control and automatic lights and wipers, and electric rear windows in addition. It is worth mentioning that such aids as automatic lights and wipers are usually available on larger cars only. The GT trim brings front fog lights and sports suspension. Production of the VW Golf still continues.
Advantages: The Golf does what you expect of a Volkswagen (superb quality, big range of models, lots of safety stuff) but drives a lot better than its predecessor and has much more space for passengers and luggage. Disadvantages: Offers incremental gains rather than a huge leap forward over the best cars in this class. The interior finish isn't of quite the same top-notch quality as before. Verdict: The new model does everything brilliantly. Also consider: Ford Focus, Opel Astra.
