The Peugeot 307 is produced since 2001. It is available as a hatchback, sedan, estate or convertible.

A number of engines were developed for it but some of them were discontinued. Best of the current ones are 2.0-liter 141 hp petrol, or the 1.6-liter 110 hp HDi, if you prefer diesels.

The 307 is taller, heavier, safer and has a different rear suspension comparing with the Peugeot 306. Furthermore it became slower to respond and gets blown more in the crosswinds. It's ride is firmer, but possible to live on with.

The Peugeot 307 has a stiffer suspension and more solid body featuring good sound isolation. You won't hear many road noise, unfortunately high and wide body with a large windscreen stir up wind noise at speed. Surprisingly the turbo diesels work silently, unless they are worked hard.

Running costs should be fairly low and Peugeot 307 keeps it's resale value relatively well, although not as good as Volkswagen Golf.

Inside the 307 everything is made from the nicely textured plastic and great trim, but the overall quality could be better. Most controls are smooth to use. The seats are firm and supportive with a good range of adjustment.

There is plenty of space for the driver and front passenger inside the Peugeot 307. Unfortunately headroom space is not sufficient for tall passengers at the rear. Another drawback is a limited forward visibility while parking. The boot has a fairly average size, but could be expanded by folding rear seats.

All 307s are well equipped. Fully adjustable driver's seat and steering wheel, power-assisted steering, remote central locking and front electric windows come as standard. Furthermore six airbags, ABS, EBD, and emergency brake assist are standard on all models. Headrests and pedals are also designed to minimize crash injuries. All models are fitted with deadlocks.

Production of the Peugeot 307 still continues.

Advantages: A well made, stylish and spacious small hatch with an extremely high level of standard safety equipment.

Disadvantages: Not as enjoyable to drive as the 306 it replaced. Tall and quite heavy, so agility and performance suffer as a result.

Verdict: Excellent safety kit, but lacklustre.

Also consider: Renault Megane, VW Golf.
