The Nissan Almera is produced since 2000. The Almera is available as a sedan or hatchback. In 2003 it was face-lifted and received a retuned suspension, new engines and upgraded interior. The 1.5-liter both petrol and diesel engines are more suited to drive around town. They are nippy, but only if revved hard. The 1.8-liter petrol and 2.2-liter diesel are more suited for a relaxing motorway cruising at a steady speed. The 2.2-liter turbodiesel is a good choice, with a good fuel economy and lots of pulling power. Unfortunately none of the Almera's is fast enough to be a hot hatch. The Nissan Almera has a precise and light steering, but the retuned suspension is hard and driving on the imperfect roads definitely won't entertain you. But it is considered to have one of the best handling in it's class. The 1.5-liter engines are noisy when revved hard. Furthermore cabin's isolation is bad enough to hear all the road and wind noises. The Almera is inexpensive to buy comparing with it's rivals. Furthermore for that price you get a rock solid build quality and reliability. It's fuel economy and servicing costs are on the good side, but residual values are poor. Inside the cabin you won't find any luxury, but everything is well built to last. A large color or monochrome or color display screen controls all the car's functions such as the trip computer, CD player or climate control. Unfortunately for the same price it's rivals offer more. The accommodation level is below average. Interior is reasonably comfortable for the driver and front passenger. The rear legroom is poor, but the Nissan Almera still has a large boot. All Almera's are completed with just a twin front airbags as standard. Side airbags and ABS come with the more expensive models only. Deadlocks and remote central locking are standard on all models. It is worth mentioning that the air-conditioner is standard on all Almera's. Furthermore it comes with electric front windows and CD player. The SE model adds a parking senseor, rear electric windows and climate control. The SVE comes with alloy wheels and electric sunroof. Production of the Nissan Almera still continues, but it is expected to be replaced in the near future.
Advantages: Good fun to drive, with precise and light steering, strong engines, and top-rate reliability. Well equipped. Disadvantages: There's a lot more noise from the engines, wind and road than in many rivals. Poor rear legroom. Verdict: Competent, but not a class leader. Also consider: Renault Megane, Toyota Corolla.
