The second generation Kia Rio is produced since 2005. It shares it's platform with the Hyundai Accent. The Kia Rio is available as a 4-door sedan or a 5-door hatchback, but only hatchback is available for the European market. There's a choice of four engines – three petrols and one diesel. The 1.5-liter diesel is probably the best choice. It has a strong pull and plenty of punch for overtaking. Petrol engines are fine in town, but the smaller ones need to be worked on the motorway. A hybrid version of the Kia Rio is expected in 2007. Driving quality of the Rio is not the strongest point, but it's far from unpleasant to drive. The ride is a little firm, and there is some body roll going through corners. The steering could give more feedback to the driver. Anyway it is definitely not the worst in the class. The diesel is noisy at low speeds, when accelerating, but it gets surprisingly quiet on the motorway. The petrol engines becomes raucous as the revs go up. A wind noise is present, but it is kept well suppressed. The Kia Rio is significantly cheaper than it's Japanese or European competitors. The diesel-powered Rio has especially good value for money. Furthermore a decent amount of standard equipment makes this value even better. However it's resale value is only average. Inside the cabin there is enough space even for tallest drivers. Unfortunately driver's position is far from perfect, as the steering wheel can be adjusted for height only and the seat height adjustment is limited. Furthermore the rear visibility is limited. There is plenty of space for the rear passengers. The boot has a good size as well. Plastics inside feel cheap, but considering the car's price it would be churlish to complain. Some small control buttons are awkward to use. The Kia Rio was rated four stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests. The basic model comes with two front airbags only, although the LX model is completed with six airbags. Stability control comes as an option on the higher-spec models. Unfortunately the Rio is short on the security list. Even the basic model comes with a CD player, air-conditioning, electric front windows. The LX trim adds alloy wheels, rear electric windows, electric door mirrors, front fog lamps and better interior trim. Production of the Kia Rio still continues.
Advantages: The Kia Rio offers a reasonable hatch for the price of the small car. It's cheap to buy and to run. Disadvantages: Unfortunately the Rio is only a basic transport. In short, you get what you pay for. Also consider: Chevrolet Aveo, Suzuki Aerio / Liana.
