Fiat Stilo

   The Fiat Stilo is produced since 2001. It is available as a hatchback only.

   There are a number of engines to choose from. The entry-level 1.2-liter petrol or 1.9-liter turbodiesel do not offer spectacular performance, but are still suitable to drive in the town. Another 1.9-liter turbodiesel, providing 115 hp is a good choice for drivers, who want long-range economy. The hottest engine is the 2.4-liter petrol, providing 170 hp, but it's acceleration is very average for such displacement.

   It's handling varies depending on the model. Suspension on the three-door hatchback is firmer than on it's five-door model. The steering is dull and wallowy handling definitely cannot match it's competitors. It has a light steering, which helps when parking, but the manual gearboxes have an unsatisfying languid action.

   All engines on the Fiat Stilo are smooth and even turbo diesels are not too noisy, and even when they are pushed hard the sound is rather pleasant than annoying. You won't hear much wind or road noise around town, but it becomes an issue on the motorway.

   The good thing about the Fiat Stilo is that it is cheap to buy. It is practical, but resale values are poor due to unreliable mechanics. Fuel economy is affordable for most models, but don't expect to run the 2.4-liter model from your pocket money.

   Inside the cabin some of materials look nice, but others feel cheap and overall build quality is below average among the medium size cars.

   Most drivers will find themselves comfortable in the Stilo, as both steering wheel and seat can be adjusted. All the controls are easy to reach on the dashboard, but it is overloaded with small switches especially on the higher-specification models, distracting attention from the road attempting to find what you need.

   But there are some good sides about the Fiat Stilo too. The five-door model is one of the best in it's class for space. There are plenty of head- and legroom for everyone. Even a folding table is mounted for the passengers. The boot is also large and can be expanded by folding the 60/40 split rear seats. In the three-door model, which isn't as tall, space is restricted for the rear passengers.

   The Fiat Stilo is completed with four airbags and ABS as standard. More expensive models come with curtain airbags. Deadlocks and immobilizer are also standard. Stability control is optional.

   The base trim is fitted with remote central locking, CD player, electronic front windows and even an air-conditioning. If you are willing to pay more, you can get alloy wheels or a better stereo system.

   Advantages: A wide range of engines and generous standard equipment. Spacious, refined and practical car.

   Disadvantages: Poor resale values, not as sharp to drive as some of it's rivals.

   Verdict: Good safety kit, but it's dull to drive.
