The Dodge Caliber is produced since 2006. It replaced the Dodge Neon and has a roughly similar dimensions to it's predecessor. It comes with four petrol engines and one turbodiesel, developed by the Volkswagen. The diesel-engined Caliber is available for the European market only. All engines have plenty of horsepower, but the Caliber do not performs too well because of it's weight. Surprisingly the weakest engine of the range - the TDI performs much better, than the petrol units. It has the best acceleration, best refinement and best fuel economy. However the 1.8-liter petrol will probably be the best seller. The 2.4-liter SRT-4 monster with 300 hp, was developed for speed lovers. The Dodge Caliber resembles a 4x4 by it's looks and the way it goes. In fact it is available with a four-wheel-drive configuration as well. The ride is soft and comfortable, as the Caliber absorbs all the bumps well, but the handling isn't good. There is far too much body roll in the corners, and the front wheels struggle for grip. Some wind and road noise get into the cabin, but it do not makes you feel uncomfortable. Unfortunately all petrol engines emit way too much noise. The diesel version is fine though. The Dodge Caliber is very cheap to buy, however in European terms it can be pricey running and servicing. The fuel economy is average for the class. Also considering that the Dodge is far from being among the most reliable brands, so it's residual values won't be strong. Caliber's build quality isn't good. It is made from a cheap materials and fit and finish in some areas is below average. Inside the cabin the plastics are hard and scratchy. The steering wheel adjusts for height only. The Dodge Caliber is larger than most of the hatchbacks in this class, but it is not as large inside. All passengers can get themselves comfortable, but overall the accommodation is just slightly better than average. Caliber's boot is probably the largest in the class, furthermore the rear seats can be folded, creating a flat loading bay. Basic Dodge Caliber comes with two airbags and side impact bars. The SE version comes with curtain airbags as well. Car's security is ensured by an alarm and immobilizer. The Caliber is well equipped for it's price. Even the entry-level cars come with front and rear electric windows, remote central locking and CD player. The SE model adds an air-conditioning, while the STX is completed with alloy wheels, electric mirrors and leather upholstery. The R/T is a top of the range trim. Production of the Dodge Caliber still continues.
Advantages: The Caliber has a looks of an offroader and soft and comfortable ride. It is also cheap to buy. Disadvantages: The handling is rough, and the cabin feels cheap. Petrol engines do not perform too well. Verdict: Very cheap to buy, so what do you expect? Also consider: Ford Focus, Toyota Matrix.
