The Volkswagen Passat is produced since 2005. It is available as a sedan or estate. The new VW Passat is much bigger car than it's predecessor, but only a fraction heavier. Surprisingly the entry level 1.6-liter engine has enough urge to keep up with the traffic. The 2.0-liter petrol and diesel units are both ideally suited for the car. The 3.2-liter V6 tops up the range and has an impressive performance for a large family car. The 3.6-liter VR6 is available in USA only. New suspension is made of aluminum significantly effected the ride quality. Now it became more sportier, but the ride quality is still great. If you want something even sharper in exchange to comfort - there is a sports suspension option. Inside the Passat you won't hear more outside noise than in average executive car. There is hardly any road noise at all. Even the diesel engines are barely audible. The only protruding sound is a slight wind whistling at motorway speeds. The VW Passat price is broadly similar to it's predecessor. Price rises largely reflect additional equipment. As usually the Passat keeps it's value better than it' rivals. Furthermore the new car is easier to repair, so servicing costs won't brake your budget. The mechanical parts are proven, so there shouldn't be any major troubles. Inside the new model everything looks appealing at a first glance. However close inspection reveals some hard and cheap-looking plastics. Nevertheless build quality is up to the highest standards. The new Volkswagen Passat has a wide range of seat and steering wheel adjustments. People of all shapes and sizes can get themselves comfortable in the driver's seat. However sports seats do not offer enough shoulder support. All controls are logically laid out. The new car has more pockets and places to keep odds. Cabin of the new Passat is taller and wider. Consequently there is more shoulder- and headroom inside. Leagroom is broadly similar to the previous model. Unfortunately the transmission tunnel, intended for the four wheel drive versions, restricts foot space. The boot is significantly larger than before, compensating the absence of hatchback in the range. The Volkswagen Passat comes with plenty of electronic aids, helping to avoid crash. Six airbags are standard across the range. A new style-key gives better theft protection. Keyless entry and starting are optional. There are three trim options available: S, SE and Sport. All models are fitted with dual-zone climate control, cooled glove box, and electronic push-button handbrake. There are plenty of luxury options, such as satellite navigation and swiveling headlights. Production of the Volkswagen Passat still continues.
Advantages: The VW Passat is stylish, spacious and drives well. Disadvantages: The ever growing car is almost as big as a full-blown executive vehicle. Verdict: Superb family transporter with a luxury touch. Also consider: Ford Mondeo, Opel Vectra.
