Nissan Primera

   The Nissan Primera is produced since 2002. It is available as a 4-door sedan or a 5-door hatchback or estate.

   The entry-level 1.6-liter petrol feels underpowered for a large car. The 1.8-liter petrol is keen, the refined 2.0-liter unit is the star performer. An improved 2.2-liter turbodiesel performs well, but is only relatively economical, as it's competitors in this class with similar characteristics offer even lower fuel consumption.

   The Primera received a new front suspension, which made it more comfortable to drive, as it absorbs most of the bumps at speed. However the low-speed ride is firm comparing with it's rivals. Steering is very light.

   It's cabin is well isolated from the outside noise. The road noise is well kept away. Engines are inaudible as well, except coupled with automatic gearboxes while accelerating rapidly. There is some wind rustle present, coming from the rear doors, but it do not makes you feel uncomfortable.

   Nissan Primera's offers reasonable running costs. It is also famous for producing solid and reliable cars and engines, but recently it's competitors offer better warranty conditions. Unfortunately it's resale values are very weak.

   The Primera received a radically improved exterior, comparing with a dull previous model. Materials inside are just as durable, as on the older model.

   Inside the cabin all the buttons are angled towards the driver and easy to read. The center console is slightly out to make it comfortable to reach. One disadvantage about the dash is that the stereo, climate control and satellite navigation is controlled from the dash mounted screen, but it attracts the attention from the road. Driver's position is comfortable. Both the steering wheel and the seat are adjusted either way.

   There is plenty of space inside the Nissan Primera, furthermore it's occupants get a nice view out. The rear seats are raised, although headroom is a bit tight for taller adults, but there is enough shoulder room at the rear seats. Boot is spacious, but it's practicality is limited by a narrow entrance and suspension intrusion.

   The Primera offers a good safety kit. It comes with twin front, side and curtain airbags as standard. Furthermore ABS with an electronic brakeforce distribution is fitted on all models as well. Electronic stability control is optional, unless you will go for SVE model or better.

   All models come are fitted with climate control, electric front windows, CD player and alloy wheels. SX trim adds rear electric windows, satellite-navigation, cruise control, bigger alloy wheels, automatic wipers and CD multichanger. The SVE model adds heated leather seats and xenon headlamps. Toping up the range there is a T-Spec model that is fitted with an intelligent cruise control and tyre pressure monitor.

   Production of the Nissan Primera still continues.

   Advantages: Dispenses with old model's dull styling inside and out. Good to drive and engines are keen workers.

   Disadvantages: Ride quality around town is not as supple as it should be. Narrow boot entrance.

   Verdict: Primera a stylish contender in family stakes.

   Also consider: Honda Accord, Mazda 6.
