The Dodge Avenger is produced since 2007. It is available as a sedan. The new Dodge Avenger is available with a choice of five engines, but the smallest ones are sold outside North America only. A star buy for Europeans is a 2.0-liter turbodiesel, developed by Volkswagen. It is fuel efficient, but performance is rather adequate, than impressive. The stronger engines are more inspiring to drive, while the top of the range 3.5-liter model delivers over 230 hp. Engines starting from the 2.4-liter unit are mated with automatic gearboxes, which hamper progress. The new Dodge Avenger uses the same platform as the Chrysler Sebring. This new car isn't bad to drive, but it is far from the class leaders. The ride is bouncy and there is excessive body lean going through the corners, while steering is unresponsive. All of these features combined make the Dodge Avenger not the most inspiring car to drive. Overall noise isolation is pretty good, except the diesel-powered model which lets the side down. The Volkswagen diesel is noisy even at the motorway speed, which is disturbing wearing motorway miles. Petrol engines perform reasonably well, while wind and road noises are not intrusive. The new Dodge Avenger is attractively priced, but it is not significantly cheaper than it's main rivals, such as the Volkswagen Passat. It is far from being economical, except the diesel-powered model. Even the 2.4-liter petrol is pricey to run. Furthermore it is unlikely that the Avenger will keep it's value well. As far as most of the mechanics is brand new it is too early to give a verdict on reliability, Interior of this car is very modern, but materials look downgraded comparing with similar cars in this class. Even the high-spec models with leather trim fail to impress. Dash is well laid out and is clear to use. Steering wheel has a both way adjustments, but the front seats could be more supportive. However most of the drivers will find themselves comfortable. The new Dodge Avenger is offered as a sedan only. Lack of the hatchback bodystyle in the range means that the car is not as versatile as some rivals. Head- and legroom is fine, while even three adults can find themselves comfortable on the rear seats. The boot is big enough. The Dodge Avenger comes with front, side and curtain airbags as standard. Stability control system is also fitted. Security equipment list contains an alarm and deadlocks to keep the thieves away. There are three trim levels available. The entry level SE comes with an air-conditioning, front and rear electric windows, and some other things that you'd expect. The 2.7-liter SXT model comes with leather upholstery, alloy wheels, electric driver's seat adjustments.
Advantages: The Dodge Avenger looks spectacular, while offers a good accommodation for four persons. The R/T has a solid performance. Disadvantages: It is not the most inspiring car to drive. Too many cheap trim elements. Verdict: Looks well, but uninspiring to drive. Also consider: Chevrolet Malibu, Nissan Altima.
