The Saab 9-5 is produced since 2006. It is available as a sedan or a station wagon. Every 9-5 comes with a turbocharged engine. The 1.9-liter diesel unit is the star buy. It is flexible enough for driving around town and has the lowest fuel consumption. There are a number of powerful petrol units for this car, but most of them are thirsty on fuel. Saab also offers engines, that can be run on biofuel. The flagship 2.3-liter Aero will get you from 0-100 km/h in just under 7 seconds. The Saab 9-5 combines a supple ride with a good body control. It turns and corners well, but the steering do not offers enough feedback. Petrol engines are very refined and inaudible, but the diesel unit growls when worked hard. Road noise rarely intrudes inside the cabin, but wind roar becomes an issue as the speed goes up. The Saab 9-5 is cheaper to buy than most of it's rivals. On the other hand it's servicing is pricey and fuel bills might hit you hard. That's why the cheaper models will keep their value better. It is worth mentioning that Saab has some serious troubles with reliability for a last couple of years. Interior of the 9-5 seems to be well-built, but some cheap-looking plastics and some other simple details do not correspond with the car's class and let the side down. Interior of the Saab is very distinctive, but all the controls are easy to reach and layout is logical enough. The only concern is about the ignition slot, positioned near the handbrake. Unfortunately there could be more storage space around the driver. Driver's seat is comfortable and supportive. Unfortunately the steering wheel could have a wider range of reach adjustments. There is plenty of space for the rear passengers. Even three adults can get themselves comfortable. The boot has a good size, but it has an awkward shape because of the suspension intrusions. Split-folding rear seats make a a flat loading platform. The Saab 9-5 received a maximum 5-star Euro NCAP crash test rating. It's safety equipment consists from twin front and side airbags. Anti-lock brakes and stability control are also standard. Disappointingly curtain airbags are not available. Every car is fitted with an alarm to keep the thieves away. The 9-5 comes fully loaded. Even the entry-level trim comes with climate control, front and rear electric windows and alloy wheels. Leather interior is standard on the higher-spec models. Production of the Saab 9-5 still continues.
Advantages: The Saab 9-5 is very refined and has a comfortable ride. Furthermore it has plenty of space inside and generous equipment level. Disadvantages: Not as good to drive as the class leaders. Some interior plastics looks cheap and resale value is weak. Verdict: Executive car with plenty of non-standard engineering decisions. Also consider: Audi A6, BMW 5-series.
