The Renault Vel Satis is produced since 2001. Currently the Renault Vel Satis is produced with two petrol engines and two diesels. The entry-level 2.2-liter turbodiesel, delivering 115 hp was discontinued in favour to a similar unit delivering 150 hp. This refined 2.2-liter engine is a pick of the bunch. Unlike the petrols it is not as powerful, but lively around town and the most fuel efficient. The Vel Satis shares it's platform with the Renault Laguna. It features a soft and comfortable ride, but it is upset by sharp turns and aggressive cornering. This car is intended for relaxed cruising Wind and engine noises are impressively isolated. Engines are hushed even when revved hard. However some road noise is present. The Renault Vel Satis is an ambitious design, but it wasn't entirely successful and was led by a poor sales. It's residual values are weak and are way behind it's German rivals. Many components were used on the previous cars and have proved trouble-free. Inside the cabin everything is made from the quality materials and is nice to look at and to touch. Wood and aluminum is nicely combined. Sadly some controls could be positioned better, particularly stereo with tiny buttons. Drivers seat has got plenty of adjustments promising ache-free long range cruising. Furthermore the Vel Satis offers an excellent all-round visibility. This car is distinguished by it's unusual height, which benefits interior space. The boot is only average, but as far as it is a hatchback it can be extended into the cabin. The Renault Vel Satis received a maximum 5-star Euro NCAP crash test rating. All models come with a full set of airbags, anti-lock brakes and stability control as standard. Sadly the new security system and deadlocks proved to be too weak. The Vel Satis is available in three trim options. Even the entry-level Expression trim comes with plenty of usual executive luxury goodies, such as climate control and alloy wheels. The top of the range Initiale trim is available only on the top-spec models. Production of the Renault Vel Satis still continues.
Advantages: Driver's seat affords superb comfort and excellent view all round. Packed with luxury toys and plenty of cabin space. Disadvantages: Not a great car to drive as a steering has little feel and the soft ride is too easily upset by lumpy roads. Verdict: Welcome different approach, but not a success. Also consider: Opel Signum, Peugeot 607.
