The new BMW 5-series is produced since 2004. It is available as a sedan or Touring station wagon. There is a wide range of engines developed for this car. The entry-level 520d turbodiesel has plenty of low-down pull and is well suited for this car. It is worth picking diesel instead of smaller displacement petrols. A range-topping 550i petrol unit delivers stunning acceleration. All engines are available with manual or automatic transmissions. The BMW 5-series features a superb handling. It goes straight to the top pf the class for driving pleasure. Furthermore it's ride comfort is excellent at all speeds, unless you will go for an optional sports suspension. There is also an option of an active steering, which increases assistance at low speeds, making maneuvering easier. Wind and road noises are well contained even at the motorway speed. Petrol engines are inaudible while driving in a relaxed style, but they make a suitably sporting bark when pushed to the limit. Diesels are slightly more heard inside, but as the revs go up their sound is rather pleasent than uncomfortable. The BMW 5-series is competitively priced. In fact it is cheaper to buy than some of it's rivals. This car is very popular among business users and has a strong resale value, what will appeal to private owners. Most of the mechanical parts were proven on the previous car, so there shouldn't be any concerns about it's reliability. The 5-series is a attractive proposition, especially the diesel models. The only awkward thing about the controls is an iDrive system, that takes time to get used to. The BMW executive car has a rock solid build quality. All materials are top-quality and put together nicely to make a hugely appealing interior. Great attention was paid to details. Driver's position is excellent. There are a great number of seat and steering wheel adjustments, so it is hard not to get comfortable. The BMW 5-series is generous on space especially for the rear seat passengers. The boot has more space than than on some larger rivals. Designers tried to make the 5-series hugely safe. Even the entry-level models are fitted with twin front, side and head airbags. The rear side airbags are optional. There are a number of standard driving aids, such as anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, traction control and stability control. A comprehensive security kit is fitted too. Every car has a CD player and electric seats, while optional Comfort seats have active head restraints to cushion the head in a crash. An optional display projects vital information onto the windscreen in the driver’s line of sight. Production of the BMW 5-series still continues.
Advantages: Manages to be even better to drive than its superb predecessor. Comfortable and spacious. Disadvantages: Some are put off by the more angular styling of the new model. Verdict: Looks not to all tastes, but simply brilliant to drive. Also consider: Audi A6, Jaguar S-type.
