The Alfa Romeo 166 is produced since 1998. Considering, that diesel engines are not available in some countries, the 2.0-liter Twin Spark is the star buy. It lacks low-rev pull, but things get better at the motorway speed. Otherwise go for a diesel to keep the running costs low. All engines developing over 150 horsepower are responsive. One of the drawbacks of this car is a four-speed automatic gearbox, coupled with a higher displacement engines. It shifts too often and is not flexible enough. The Alfa Romeo 166 received a facelift in 2003 as well as a revised chassis. It reduced body lean and made handling more pleasent, however it it still far from it's rivals in terms of handling. The low-speed ride is firm. Alfa Romeo's engines emit a pleasant sporty exhaust note, when revved hard, unfortunately wind and road noises are poorly isolated for an executive car. The 166 is well priced against it's German rivals, but it is a rather poor proposition for private buyers. It's resale value is weak, while the running costs and servicing might hit you hard. The Alfa Romeo is bought warily due to it's mechanical failures and glitches. Inside the cabin some materials look cheap comparing to it's rivals. Furthermore all the interior feels out-dated. The front seat and the steering wheel have enough adjustments to suit drivers of all shapes and sizes. Furthermore driver's seat is comfortable for long trips. All-round visibility is also good. There is plenty of space for the front passengers, however the rear accomodation is not that generous. There is enough leg- and shoulder room for three adults on the back seats, but sadly the rear headroom is restricted, so taller adults will scrap their heads against the roof lining. Boot is quiet large for it's class. This Italian executive car is strong on safety. Even the entry-level models are equipped with six airbags. Anti-lock brakes and stability control are also standard. However security equipment of the Alfa Romeo 166 falls below average. All models comes with most of the luxury goodies you would expect. Climate control, full competent of electrics are standard across the range. Leather upholstery comes with the top-spec models, otherwise optional. Other options include satellite navigation and better stereo system. Production of the right hand drive models of the Alfa Romeo 166 ended in 2005 and it is currently produced in limited numbers for a left hand drive countries only.
Advantages: Sharp looks and decent engines. Disadvantages: Not as comfortable as a Mercedes and not as keen as a BMW. Verdict: An affordable luxury car but not on the same league with it's German rivals. Also consider: BMW 5-series, Volvo S80.
